About Barrenjoey Montessori School
Barrenjoey Montessori School (BMS) is an independent not-for-profit school established in 1985 by a group of parents dedicated to creating Montessori education opportunities on Sydney’s upper Northern Beaches. Commencing with a single preschool class in Newport, the school has grown to cater for the education of children from 0–12 years across three campuses.

Tucked behind the sand dunes of Avalon Beach in the Des Creagh Reserve, our Tasman Rd campus is home to both primary and preschool students. The school relocated from Newport to the purpose-built Avalon site in 1990 and continued to attract many families. With growing demand, strong interest in Montessori primary education, and a community of dedicated parents, the school secured a government grant allowing it to launch an extensive building project. By December 2010, the school had added a second Cycle 1 classroom, as well as a Cycle 2 (lower primary) classroom. In 2017, further building work added solar panels and a sustainable new classroom, creating space for a Cycle 3 (upper primary) class. Barrenjoey Montessori School’s Tasman Rd campus now offers education from preschool through to Year 6.

Commencing in 2020 as a dedicated preschool site, our John St campus in Avalon is tucked away in a quiet residential street. The classroom opens onto a large garden, providing students with plenty of space and opportunities for learning and play. Students at our John St campus enjoy joining students at our Tasman Rd campus for a variety of programs including mindfulness, peer support and whole school incursions. The school bus provides safe and easy transportation between sites.
